Like a rich Swedish family, he celebrates the birthday of his patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, crying and whispers), the news of the beginning of World War I arrives at the remote island of Baltic – and the happy humor becomes horror. The family goes down to a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly caused by the Tarkovsky palette arrested by bright gray, washing the dark landscape in his home. (The masterful cinematography of the film is by Sven Nikist, the longtime associate of Ingmar Bergman). For Alexander the philosopher, concerned about man’s lack of spirituality, the perspective of a certain disappearance forces the final victim, and he enters a fasting agreement with God to save his loved ones from the fear that attracts them. The director’s last movie made while he was dying of cancer, the victim is Tarkovsky’s personal statement, a deeply moving and redeeming tragedy, pierced in unforgettable images and thrilling the heart.
